Healing Breathwork

What is Breathwork?

Breathwork is a powerful healing tool that harnesses the breath as a conduit for releasing trauma, tension and blocked emotions that have accumulated in the body over the course of a lifetime. One breathwork session can feel like a decade of therapy without uttering a single word.

What we today call Breathwork originated as the Hindu practice of Pranayama — Sanskrit for “breath control” — which was meant to support practitioners in achieving altered states of consciousness to promote spiritual growth. In the 1960’s, transpersonal psychology pioneers such as Stanislov Grof and Leonard Orr discovered the healing benefits of these ancient Eastern practices and through developing their own versions of Breathwork, introduced them to the Western world.

There are many names for Breathwork such as Holotropic Breathwork, Transformational Breath, Conscious Breathwork, Rebirthing Breathwork, Biodynamic Breath, Integrative Breathwork, Shamanic Breathwork, Zen Yoga Breathwork, Holistic Breathwork as well as others. 

What can Breathwork do?

Breathwork is a holistic healing tool that addresses the whole person in a way that honors the individual’s ability to heal oneself. That means that there are no limits to what it can provide for the practitioner. I, as the facilitator, am not healing you. I am simply creating a safe space for you to heal yourself. Breathwork can provide relief from any psychological ailment you can imagine such as:

  • anxiety

  • depression

  • grief

  • trauma

  • anger

  • low self-esteem

  • relationship issues

  • addiction

Not only can it help you move through the unpleasant emotions, help you let go of tension in the body and heal trauma, is can also move you into new heights of consciousness. Breathwork can open you up to:

  • greater sense of peace

  • clarity in decision-making

  • letting go of control

  • more connection to purpose

  • emotional breakthroughs

  • spiritual experiences
